Waikato DHB threat wrong target

Waikato District Health board member Dave McPherson has spoken out against a threat to sack the board and replace it with a commissioner in two weeks.
Health Minister David Clark says he’s considering the move because of a likely financial deficit and reports by board chair Sally Webb, a ministerial appointee, of dissension within the board.
Mr McPherson says the supposed dissension has arisen directly from the public fuss caused by the Ms Webb’s decision to try and overturn findings from a coroner’s inquest into the death of his son Nicky Stevens, who committed suicide while in a board mental health unit.
He says Minister Clark needs to come and talk to the whole board, not just to the three ministerial appointees.
Appointing a commissioner won’t reduce the deficit, especially if the Minister wants health inequalities for Māori to be reduced, or change the fact many DHB staff are rebelling against the effects of poor health funding by previous Governments.
