Haka plus loops puts Mihirangi on world stage

Māoridom’s queen of the loops Mihirangi Fleming has wowed an international folk, world and roots music industry showcase.
The 2012 New Zealand’s got Talent finalist, originally from Bennydale, was rated by Songlines magazine as one of the top three performers at last month’s Folk Alliance International in Montreal, Canada, which brings together thousands of record labels, managers, agents, festival bookers and artists.
As Māmā Mihirangi & The Māreikura, she has added two kapa haka performers who do women’s haka, waiata-ā-ringa, mau-rākau, taiaha and poi to complement her electronic loops and waiata, which are often about empowering women, inclusivity and environmentalism.
As a result of the showcase she was booked to appear at this year’s Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, alongside Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Norah Jones.
