Health inquiry chance to have Māori voice heard
That’s the response of Māori Council executive director Matthew Tukaki to the decision by parliament’s Māori affairs select committee to inquire into the impact of the health system on Māori.
Depending on the terms of reference everything could be on the table, the operations of government drug buying agency Pharmac, inequities in delivery of primary health care and the poor treatment experienced by disabled and older Māori.
He says it’s a chance for Māori to be heard after feeling their voices have been drowned out in other reviews, such as the Mental Health and Addiction Inquiry.
"We want to activate a campaign promoting the fact this inquiry is out there and we are going to issue some guidance about how you can pull together the connectivity between the health kaupapa, the whānau ora kaupapa, the stuff that’s coming out of the tribunal’s health review, even the education reforms, it all relates to the health and well being of our people which continues to see us pushed back," Mr Tukaki says.
