Greens co-leader Marama Davidson is sticking up for schoolkids skipping classes to protest climate change inaction.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has labelled the planned protest pretentious, saying climate change is something for the adults to handle.

But Ms Davidson says it’s governments and politicians who have been taking the day off for far too long instead of taking action to protect their future.

"I"m way older than them. I’m going to be gone when these young people are going to be dealing face to face with the real impacts of the devastation climate change will bring if we don't get our act together. So I am fully 100 percent behind these young people. What is education if not to engage and mobilise young people who are informed. This is education," she says.
