Ngahere returns to Māngere maunga
Auckland’s Tūpuna Maunga Authority has ambitious plans for Māngere Mountain, also known as Te Pane o Mataoho and Te Ara Pueru.
Next week arborists will start removing about 150 exotic trees, including many pest plants and several large macrocarpa trees on the ridge-line at the tihi.
Over winter they will plant 13,000 native trees and shrubs to create a native ecosystem reflective of what was originally present on the maunga.
The significant native ornate and copper skink populations will benefit from the planting of 600 new low-growing native plants on the northern slope.
Chair Paul Majurey says Māngere Mountain is one of the best-preserved Māori volcanic pā sites in the Auckland region, with intact archaeology such as ancient kūmara pits and midden which are some of the last and few remaining traces of early Māori life in Tāmaki Makaurau.
