Māori resilience in civil defence study.
A scheme to improve Māori community engagement in the event of natural disasters and other emergencies is among projects to win support from a regional civil defence fund.
Civil Defence Minister Kris Faafoi says the Resilience Fund will this year grant $670,000 to eight projects.
In recent years the fund has made possible a number of valuable projects including the AF8 Alpine Fault earthquake response plan, East Coast LAB or Life at the Boundary and the Marae Preparedness Toolkit.
Karl Wairama, who put together the application for the Te ara o Tāwhaki project, says a review of the Kaikoura earthquake response indicated a need for greater responsivity to Māori when designing solutions.
The project will look at community resilience and develop measurements that apply to Māori communities.
It will use kaupapa Māori processes and traditional Māori stories to create a framework, as well as assessment and engagement with communities.
