Climate strike not cool for Korako
As National’s stance on climate change comes under fire from the Māori climate commissioner, MP Nuk Korako has cast doubt on the wisdom of New Zealand school children skipping classes to protest government inaction.
The commissioner, Donna Awatere Huata, says the planned strike on March 15 is a chance for New Zealand rangatahi to follow in the footsteps of 15 year old Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg who took her rage to the Swedish parliament.
Mr Korako says while he supports young people being involved in issues, they could protest outside school hours.
"It’s your right, living in a democracy, that we have, but I just don’t think we should be trying to push this, to the fact they may take time off school to actually do that," he says.
Donna Awatere Huata says National is still in denial about the true scale of climate change and the reality that it threatens the economy and environment, and like the Government it seems to be only paying lip service to the problem.
