Rangatahi target for crown reo Māori strategy

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta has laid out the first steps of a plan to get a million people speaking basic te reo Māori by 2040.
Launching Maihi Karauna, the Crown’s Māori language strategy, at Te Matatini yesterday, the minister said it is intended to complement Maihi Māori overseen by Te Mātāwai, which supports iwi, hapū and whānau aspirations towards te reo Māori revitalisation.
She says it will focus on initiatives for young learners including:
– Hosting rangatahi regional workshops and a national summit.
– A social marketing campaign to promote the value of te reo Māori.
– Snap-reo, a series of quick, micro-lessons in te reo Māori, available on a variety of media.
She says the Government wants young people to feel confident in who they are coming from New Zealand, and a way to achieve this is to share a connection through te reo Māori.
