Phony transition claim as Taranaki looks to future

Climate Justice Taranaki says a plan to find alternatives to the region's reliance on the oil and gas sector is based on the same profit-driven, environmentally and socially destructive global capitalist model.

Public workshops start this week on the Taranaki 2050 Roadmap.

Climate Justice spokesperson Emily Bailey says it's based on the Tapuae Roa strategy and action plan written by the Ministry for Business Innovation and Enterprise, the four councils and business heads with little iwi input.

The community only gets a say once the core of the plan is set and the workshops are during work hours when most people can't participate.

She says the focus remains on economic growth without acknowledging such growth typically comes from social and environmental degradation.

Ms Bailey says a just transition must address the fact all natural resources and ecosystems are on the brink of collapse due to modern take, use and trash lifestyles.

Meanwhile, Ngāti Ruanui has slammed a new advertising campaign from the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand.

Kaiarataki Debbie Ngarewa Packer says it encourages New Zealanders to ignore the seriousness of climate change.

She says the association represents a sunset industry, and the scaremongering needs to stop.
