Atihau Whanganui breeds for premium
Ohakune-based Atihau Whanganui Incorporation has partnered with distributor Food Chain to market its steaks as Awhi Farms Ruapehu Angus.
Chair Mavis Mullins says as a Maori-owned enterprise it takes a multi-generational perspective and tries to manage its 100,000 acres in ways that care for the land, the people and the animals.
She says it has invested in the best genetics to achieve a type of marbling of the fat within the meat similar to that found in the sought-after Wagyu breed.
"We test for it. We understand what it means and what we have to do it achieve it. That all forms part of our operating system on farm. People may think meat just comes as it is but there is a science to it and it is also about our animals having the best life possible, and that sounds a but naff, but that is very meaningful to us," Ms Mullins says.
