Hot times for taonga tuna

Te Wai Māori Trust says not enough is being done to protect New Zealand’s eels.
Chair Ken Mair says as well as being a taonga species for iwi Māori, tuna provide a good indicator of overall fresh water environmental health.
He says they face ongoing habitat degradation and the effects of climate change.
The trust is calling for iwi and hapū to be given a greater role in decisions relating to tuna.
Climate change needs to be factored into habitat and fisheries management, and new regulations and compliance mechanisms are needed.
