Food bank queues women’s work

The Auckland City Missioner says basing the mission’s annual Christmas hand-out at marae have been an inspired decision.
Because the mission’s inner city headquarters is being rebuilt distribution shifted to Eden Park, Papakura Marae and Ngā Whare Waatea.
Chris Farrelly says it’s manaaki at a deep level.
"We’re not just seeing people lining up for food. We are seeing them being connected as human beings with dignity. There is a lot of humour. There is a real whānau feeling. We are privileged and proud to be working with the marae and a fantastic partnership is emerging beween the mission and our marae," he says.
Auckland City Mission expected high demand because of a huge increase in food insecurity over the past year, but the response has been extraordinary, with 75 percent of those queuing being women.
