Destiny vision for Ngāpuhi vote
A technical advisor to the Ngāpuhi claimants says a lot of what is being said about the latest proposal for getting settlement talks back on track doesn’t reflect what is in the document.
Leaders of Ngāti Hine are calling for people to vote against the proposal because they say it will pit hapū against hapū in dividing up the settlement.
Willie Te Aho says he has spoken to Ngāti Hine chair Waihoroi Shortland and others to offer to meet their people and answer any questions.
He’s encouraging members to think about what they could do if they had over $300 million in resources.
"The position we want to get Ngāpuhi hapū into is they are in control of their destiny. Rather than talking about all the negative statistics that prevail on them, we want to put them in a position that they can truly move forward and start being the kings of the north that they deserve to be," Mr Te Aho says.
He says unlike the previous mandate, the new format will allow hapū to withdraw.
Consultation hui and voting start next week.
