Wellness key to Whānau ora outcome
One of the architects of Whānau Ora says the service delivery model is meeting and exceeding his expectations.
Speaking at commissioning agency Te Pou Matakana’s biennial conference, Professor Sir Mason Durie said it was now recognised that no one sector or organisation can do everything for people, and networking is the answer.
He says a lot of work has gone into finding new ways to measure and evaluate success in Whānau Ora, because conventional measures used by funding agencies were inadequate.
"The outcome measures we use are not necessarily symptom reduction but about wellness and that is what Whānau ora does. It helps people who are really struggling in life and it doesn't stop once the struggle is over. It stops when they are well, and I think it is the achievement of wellness that is different about Whānau Ora," Professor Sir Mason Durie says.
