Maori successes shared at leadership summit

The head of Māori health workforce development organisation says Māori need to share their stories and celebrate their successes.
Te Rau Matatini is holding its annual two-day Toitu Hauora Māori Health Leadership Summit at Otago University, with speakers responding to the theme Toi te kupu, Toi te mana, Toitū te whenua – hold fast to culture, mana, language and land.
Maria Baker says the hui brings together people working in hauora, social and community agencies, education and iwi.
She says it's a celebration of the collective spirit that makes Māori strong, as well as an acknoweledgement iof the challenges they face.
"It's important to value Māori for being Māori, for making a huge difference to the people. The challenges never get boring but we find ways to be innovative, we find inspiration from each other," Dr Baker says.
To mark the first time the summit has been held in the South Island, Te Rau Matatini with the University of Otago launched a scholarship for masters in mental health, named after keynote speaker and Otago alumni Professor Sir Mason Durie.
