Call for forum pressure over Nauru refugees
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson wants the Prime Minister to visit the Australian detention centre in Nauru when she is on the island tomorrow for Pacific Islands Forum.
A report by the Refugee Council of Australia released yesterday says there is overwhelming evidence of abuse and suffering with at least two people killing themselves and children as young as seven self-harming or attempting suicide.
Ms Davidson says she can understand Jacinda Ardern may have her hands tied because she does not want to give people false hope when Australia has refused to take up this country’s offer to take the refugees.
"As a Green politician I would like for us to take any opportunity to see first hand the devastation that is happening and for us to be able to use our privileged platforms to send a clear message to the world we have to fix this, that either Australia sort this out and remove children from such inhumane conditions or allow New Zealand to help out," she says.
