Eye sprint for school squint
Optometrists have been out and about in low decile South Auckland primary schools today testing hundreds of tamariki.
About a third of the 4600 children tested in similar sweeps have been found to have eyesight conditions needing treatment or glasses.
Optometrist Hayden Treanor from Visique Frith & Laird says the exercise and follow-up are organised by the Essilor Vision Foundation.
"Those kids we find that need glasses, the foundation will gove those glasses to families for free – one for home and one for school," he says.
Parents with a community services card can get their children aged under 15 tested for free at any time and are eligible for a subsidy for corrective glasses.
