Maunga safe for walking

The Tūpuna Maunga ō Tāmaki Makaurau Authority has started work closing off the summit of Maungarei-Mount Wellington to cars.
Movable bollards will allow people with limited mobility to still drive up the mountain.
Authority chair says Paul Majurey while there has been some protests about other closures, particularly Takarunga-Mount Victoria in Devonport, in the main the communities appreciate having a safer space to walk.
"We have Maungawhau-Mt Eden, Takarunga-Mt Victoria, Puketāpapa-Mr Roskill, Maungakiekie-One Tree Hill, all been through pedestrianisation and there have been those changes, there has been some comment from folk who don't warm to change so much but the overwhelming feedback is one of real support for the kaupapa and they recognise what these things are, these very special places in Tamaki Makaurau," he says.
Work on the last maunga to be pedestrianised, Ōwairaka-Mt Albert, will be done later in the year.
