Seafood exports mussel up to $2 billion
New Zealand's export earnings from seafood are expected to crack the $2 billion mark by 2022, with aquaculture leading the way, says Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash.
The Ministry for Primary Industries' latest Situation and Outlook report says aquaculture exports should reach $430 million this year and reach nearly $600 million in 2022.
wild capture fish products are expected to reach $1.4 billion this year and climb to $1.5 billion in 2022.
Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash says hatchery-bred spat is improving mussel production in both quantity and quality, and prices are increasing as demand grows in key markets.
Salmon production is also increasing with three new farms operating in the Marlborough Sounds.
China's plans to reduce its catch should benefit New Zealand with higher prices for its products.
Mr Nash says recent regulation changes have allowed the use of innovative precision harvesting trawl technology to produce high quality products such as those under the new Tiaki brand.
The Marine Stewardship Council has certified many New Zealand fisheries as sustainable, which raises environmental credibility among consumers and will support export prices.
