Tuuta, Mather to hear public broadcast providers
Changes in governance at Maori Television and Radio New Zealand National.
Jamie Tuuta from Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Tama, Te Ati Awa and Taranaki Tuturu has been appointed chair of the Maori Television board, replacing former National MP Georgina te Heuheu.
Mr Tuuta is chief executive of the Maori Trustee Te Tumu Paeroa and chairs the Maori fisheries settlement trust Te Ohu Kaimoana as well as a number of tribal organisations.
Peter Lucas Jones from Ngati Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngai Takoto and Te Aupouri, who has been a member of the board since 2016, was appointed deputy chair.
The announcement was made by Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta and Te Waihoroi Shortland and Mereana Selby, the co-chairs of Maori language advocacy body Te Matawai which acts as an electoral college for board appointments.
And former Maori Television chief executive Jim Mather has been appointed chair of the Radio New Zealand board.
He is currently the chief executive of Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran says Dr Mather is highly regarded as a chief executive and his understanding of the public broadcasting ethos and landscape means he’ll be able to make a significant contribution as the RNZ Chair.
The Government wants RNZ to boost its digital television and online presence in what it’s calling the RNZ+ plan.
