Manu and rakau names for Ngati Toa development
A new suburb planned for the former Porirua mental hospital grounds will have streets carrying the Maori names of birds and trees.
Ngati Toa Rangitira and Carrus Ltd are developing up to 700 residential lots in what will be known as Kenepuru Landing.
Porirua City Council’s street naming policy sets themes for suburbs, with Papakowhai streets named for Scottish rivers, Ascot Park for famous racehorses and Whitby for nautical and Captain Cook themes.
After consultation with Ngati Toa the council added trees to this these because many of the bird names were already in use in the Wellington region, although whio or kokako are among those still available.
Delivery committee chair Anita Baker says with many of Porirua’s older streets giving a nod to European settlers, Maori names needed to be embraced for the new ones.
