Greens consider doctoring Northcote race
The Greens will decide this week whether to field a candidate in the Northcote by-election.
With a 6200 vote majority at the general election the seat should be a safe pick up for National’s Dan Bidois, but Shanan Halbert will be keen to increase Labour’s vote as an endorsement of the Government’s direction.
The entry of a Green candidate would almost certainly end any remote possibility of Mr Halbert winning.
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says members in Northcote are keen for a contest, but the decision is still to be made.
"Whatever the decision is, our candidate from last year, Dr Rebekah Jaung, amazing young brilliant Korean doctor New Zealander is fantastic and if we do decide to stand I’d be looking to support her into that candidacy," she says.
Rebekah Jaung got just under 2500 votes in the general election.
