Career opportunities in infrastructure spend up
Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones says young Maori should prepare themselves now for a boom in major project spending.
He's heading over the Tasman this week to see how the Australians fund and manage major infrastructure projects.
He says they have provided work for many of the Maori who have crossed the ditch, and the same should happen back here.
"A lot of our men are working in these kinds of projects in Australia and I am a strong believer that as we roll out big projects in New Zealand we've got to train and have apprenticeships for the next generation. Not all of our rangatahi are going to trot off to university. There are great careers to be made in the standard workforce," Mr Jones says.
He will talk to both government and private sector advisors on whether private capital as well as the government balance sheet can be part of project funding.
