Mather moving on as wananga thrives
Te Wananga o Aotearoa is looking for a new chief executive.
Tumuaki Jim Mather says he wants to spend more time with his young family, so he won't renew his contract when it expires in October.
He says the country's largest Maori tertiary institution has been in surplus throughout his term.
And unlike polytechnics which are struggling, enrolments in the wananga sector are booming.
"Regardless of the strength of the economy, people are passionate about their culture, still passionate about our national language te reo Maori and also committed to other things than employment related outcomes so all of that reflects really well in terms of our financial performance," Mr Mather says.
He will look for other opportunities in Maori development.
