Long life the Whatua way


Ngati Whatua Orakei chair Marama Royal says the Auckland hapu wants its people to live longer and healthier.
The trust will spend up to $3m a year to offer all its New Zealand-based members private health insurance through a deal with nib New Zealand.
Ms Royal says the trust talked with members about what they wanted for themselves and their families, and health came up regularly.
"It's really been driven by Ngati Whatua Orakei to improve the health outcomes of our members supported by a wellness programme and health coaching and it is also about future thinking. We look at the preventative side of things so it is not just about being sick but about being well. We want our whanau to live longer and to live healther," she says.
The hapu has about 2500 registered adult members including about 250 kaumatu, and it expects to get about 70 percent take up.
