Tertiary funding system not fit for purpose
Students, staff, and leaders of tertiary institutions are challenging Education Minister Chris Hipkins, to develop a new funding model for vocational education and training.
A forum in Auckland last week declared the current system isn't working, especially for diverse learners including Maori, Pasifika, second chance learners, sole parents, mature students, students with disabilities, and LGBTI.
They said the existing market-based, competitive funding model cannot guarantee the sector can deliver lifelong learning opportunities for all New Zealanders.
The minister need to work with staff, students and sector leaders including iwi to develop a new funding model.
That model needs to guarantee regional provision of tertiary education, so all people can access learning opportunities in their communities.
