Ratana shine in Aotea kapa haka
Te Reanga Morehu o Ratana turned a home advantage into a winning performance at the weekend, scoring their sixth win in a row in the Aotea regional kapa haka competition.
It was the first time the competition was held at Ratana Pa.
Rohe delegate Kahurangi Simon says while many of the groups, especially the Taranaki teams, raised the issue of seabed mining, there was also acknowledgement of the significance of the year to the Ratana movement.
"The wairua tapu descended on Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana on November 8, 1918 so this is the centennial year of when the faith was born. This (competition) was one of many events this year leading up to November 8 to celebrate that very special event for te iwi morehu," he says.
The other two teams who will represent Aotea at Te Matatini next year are Mr Simon's Te Matapihi from Kaiwhaiki and Nga Purapura o te Taihauauru from Waitara.
