Frontline groups share homeless lessons
FULL INTERVIEW WITH TOMMY 'KAPAI' WILSON
Maori organisations on the frontline of dealing with the homeless are hosting a hui in Tauranga today to share what they have learned and to look for new approaches.
Organiser Tommy Kapai Wilson from Te Tuinga Whanau Trust says he's pleased at the support from government organisations, who have a new willingness to listen to those doing the mahi.
He says his trust in Tauranga, Te Puea Memorial Marae in Auckland and He Korowai Trust in Kaitaia have a compelling story.
"Together we have collectively got about 60 years experience looking after the homeless and I believe what we are doing is right so we are coming out showing people what can be done when you spend a little time, give a little hope, and give our whanau a warant of fitness to be good tenants," Mr Wilson says.
Many of those at the national homelessness forum will go on to tomorrow's New Zealand Coalition to End Homelessness conference at AUT University in Auckland, which includes a special focus on Maori homelessness.
