Community sets kaupapa for Kaika health centre
The South Dunedin community is preparing for the opening of the city’s first kaupapa Maori health and social services centre.
Te Kaika is the redevelopment of a former school in Caversham to house medical and dental clinics and social work agencies.
Project manager Albie Lawrence says a partnership with Otago University means the centre will also include clinical and teaching facilities medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and physiotherapy.
He says the Ngai Tahu-led initiative aims to improve access to primary care for Maori, Pasifika and low income whanau in the city.
"A lot of services in Dunedin are not provided under a kaupapa Maori or cultural focus so it’s about putting Maori and the communities that use these services as a focal point and allowing them to govern and control the way those services are delivered," he says.
Te Kaika will open on February 28
