SOUL offers Fletchers exit with dignity

Supporters of Ihumatao-based Save Our Unique Landscape or SOUL rallied at lunchtime outside Fletcher Buildings’ Penrose headquarters to call for it to scrap a 400-house development near the historic south Auckland village.
Spokesperson Brendon Corbett says Fletchers is on the ropes with a series of major projects running over time and over budget, and Ihumatao is one more it cannot afford to start.
He says in the three years SOUL has been occupying the development site next to the Otuataua Stonefields the company has refused to come to the table to talk to mana whenua.
"We are feeling more empowered and Fletchers are in this difficult situation so we are calling on them to sit at the table and we have a raft of proposals of ways for Fletchers to exit this place with a bit of dignity and to retain this incredibly special part of Mangere and special part of New Zealand,,"Mr Corbett says.
While SOUL believes it has supporters within the new Government, Auckland Council which issued the resource consents has shown it is happy to let developers shape the city rather than work towards a common vision.
