More than 200 people were at the flagstaff at Maiki Hill for yesterday morning’s event.
The flagpole was repeatedly chopped down by Hone Heke in protest at what he felt were broken promises in the Treaty of Waitangi.
The rising tension led to the Northern War on 1845.
Dame Patsy acknowledged the action a decade later by northern chiefs to reinstate the flagpole was a gesture to say the war was over and they wanted to work with the crown.
