Traci Houpapa to lead pay equity mahi
Maori business high flyer and Federation of Maori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa has been appointed facilitator of a reconvened Joint Working Group on Pay Equity Principles.
Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Iain Lees-Galloway says the original group set up in 2015 developed a set of principles to guide the implementation of pay equity, but the legislation introduced was scrapped by the new Government because it made it harder for women to make a pay equity claim.
Minister for Women Julie Anne Genter says the new Government is committed to improving fairness in the workplace for women.
She says a woman shouldn’t be paid less just because she is working in a male dominated industry.
The tripartite partners include government representatives, unions led by the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, and employers led by BusinessNZ and the Employers and Manufacturers Association.
The ministers say Ms Houpapa is a respected leader in working with business, iwi and diverse stakeholders.
The reconvened Joint Working Group has been asked to consider how to determine the merit of a claim as a pay equity claim; and how to select appropriate male comparators when assessing the work subject to a pay equity claim.
Its recommendations are due by the end of February so legislation can be drafted for introduction mid-year.
