Oil dumping enrages mayor
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has asked council officials to go hard in finding out who dumped leaking barrels of oil waste on the city fringe.
Mr Goff says he spotted 13 barrels filled with used oil filters while driving in to work from his Clevedon home.
Another 32 barrels were dumped by the road to Piha, with oil leaking towards a stream that feed a city reservoir.
"This is just irresponsible, lazy, selfish people who won't pay to dispose of their rubbish properly and would rather damage the environment and put the cost on other ratepayers to clean up their mess. I've said to the council unit here let's go all out, let's look at our CCTV cameras we have around the city, let's look at the serial numbers on the barrels, let's try to track these people down, because under the Resource Management Act we could hit them with up to a $300,000 fine," Mr Goff says.
He says there may need to be law changes to tackle roadside dumping.
