Korako fights on for Ture Whenua Bill

National's Maori development spokesperson is urging the new Government to press ahead with Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill.
The complete rewrite of Maori land was instigated by former associate minister Christopher Finlayson and championed by the Maori Party, had reached the committee stage of parliament before debate was suspended.
Nuk Korako says a huge amount of work was done to get the bill to that stage, and it would be simple to pass it now.
"If we could get that through it's a huge plus for Maori and I've always believed this and I've seen it is that the greatest untapped economic opportunity that exists in New Zealand is the potential to unlock unused Maori land, and this is what this bill will do," he says.
New Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta has indicated she will make some changes to the existing Maori land law, but the complete rewrite is a dead letter.
