Push for smokefree cars
The previous Government has been accused of failing in its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child by not introducing legislation to make cars carrying children, smokefree.
The charge was made in a report by researchers from Otago and Auckland universities which found overwhelming community support for such a ban.
Lance Norman from Maori public health organisation Hapai Te Hauora says it’s a great opportunity for new Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to deliver on her commitment to prioritise the wellbeing of children.
He says the most likely to benefit will be Maori children, but it’s important a health-based approach is taken rather than one which which simply criminalises parents.
