Ngati Whatua Orakei and Paoa bury hatchet again

Auckland iwi Ngati Whatua Orakei and Ngati Paoa are making another effort to settle their differences out of court.
The Court of Appeal this week upheld a High Court ruling that Orakei did not have exclusive rights to commercial settlement properties in central Auckland and could not veto settlement offers to other iwi.
Orakei spokesperson Ngarimu Blair says it will now work with Ngati Paoa face to face and according to tikanga.
A similar kawenata was signed earlier this year.
Mr Blair says the new accord acknowledges Ngati Paoa has lead mana whenua interests in the east of Tamaki and over much of the North Shore, while Ngati Paoa accepted Otakei's lead mana whenua in central Auckland.
They are working to build a positive relationship where both iwi can look to cultural and commercial opportunities across Tamaki Makaurau.
He says the iwi will continue to discuss the nature and extent of Ngati Whatua Orakei interests on the North Shore, and both Iwi are committed to engaging with others as to their North Shore interests.
The agreement signed today enables Ngati Paoa to withdraw from ongoing legal action and clears the way for the iwi to settle with the crown.
Ngati Whatua will continue legal action against the settlement offered to the Marutuahu collective and the crown's policy on overlapping claims.
