SOUL takes Ihumatao protest to Newton
A group trying to stop development at Ihumatao is taking its protest into central Auckland next week.
Save Our Unique Landscape or SOUL plans a hikoi along Karangahape Road on December 10, with stops for speeches, waiata and kapa haka.
Spokesperson Pania Newton says SOUL is appealing the resource consent given to Fletcher Building to develop a special housing area on the site, which she says will destroy a spring, burial sites and other features.
Karangahape Rd was chosen because of its historic connection to Hape, whose descendants still live at Ihumatao on the edge of the Manukau Harbour.
"It’s a significant rohe. It has a lot of history. It has a lot of different cultures, it's a bit of a melting pot, and I think a lot of people can connect with that particular place," Ms Newton says.
