Nga Tamatoa celebrates legacy
Nga Tamatoa veterans met in Kirikiriroa over the weekend to capture memories to share with their mokopuna.
Tame Iti says it was great to be reminded of the spirit of the times, when young people's passions were inflamed by opposition to the Vietnam War, racism and struggles at home over issues like land and language.
"Nga Tamatoa was involved in a global movement of consciousness within the Black Panther movement, American Indigenous (Indian) Movement, African movements, things that were happening in South America with the Chilean people, so it was amidst that things were happening at that time of consciousness, tangata whenua," he says.
Planning has started for the 50th anniversary of Nga Tamatoa in 2020.
