Cultural strategist lined up for Venice 2019

Former New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute director Karl Johnstone has been appointed kaihautu for New Zealand participation in the 2019 Venice Biennale, working alongside commissioner Dame Jenny Gibbs.
Mr Johnstone, from Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki, and Ngai Tamanuhiri, will support the commissioner including being available for official activities during the Vernissage or opening events.
He is a member of the Arts Council and runs his own cultural strategy consultancy, Haumi.
It will be the ninth time New Zealand has been officially represented at one of the art world's most prestigious events, which this year features Lisa Reihana's show Emnmisaries including her panoramic video in Pursuit of Venus [infected].
Dame Jenny is an arts patron and collector and a long-standing supporter of New Zealand’s presence at the biennale.
Today was the deadline for proposals from visual artists and curatorial teams, with a panel of curators and former participants set to recommend by the end of October who will represent New Zealand in 2019.
