Sea Shepherd takes aim at dolphin deaths

A boat which was used to defend pilot whales from being slaughtered in the Faroe Islands of the North Atlantic has come to the bottom of the South Island to make a stand for the endemic Hector’s dolphin.
Operation Pahu is the first campaign in New Zealand by conservation organization Sea Shepherd.
Campaign leader Grant Meike from Ngai Tahu says the Loki will be used to look for illegal recreational set nets or illegal, unregulated, and unreported commercial and fishing.
The first phase will focus on Te Waewae Bay up to the Canterbury Bight.
He says Sea Shepherd is also working with local iwi and scientists to monitor and document populations to check recovery and assist with abundance estimates.
