Maori Board added to mayoral housing team
Auckland mayor Phil Goff says Maori are feeling the brunt to the city’s housing shortage and affordability crisis.
He says they feature prominently in homelessness figures, the decline in home ownership, and the number of people struggling with rising rents at a time of low real wage growth.
He has made the Independent Maori Statutory Board part of the steering group to implement the recommendations of a mayoral task force on housing.
"Working together, working with the private sector, working with central government, acknowledging the problem and then starting to tackle it is what the wider community wants to see," Mr Goff says.
He says housing will be one of the biggest issues in the election because access to stable, warm, healthy housing is a fundamental human right.
