Ngati Paoa hits back at Orakei attack

Ngati Paoa has hit back at an attack by fellow Tamaki Makaurau iwi Ngati Whatua Orakei, accusing spokesperson Ngarimu Blair of hypocrisy and playing politics with another iwi’s settlement.
Mr Blair has criticised Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson for initialling a settlement with Ngati Paoa that includes two settlement properties in central Auckland.
He says it’s a breach of tikanga which should be sorted out on the marae.
Ngati Paoa negotiator Hauauru Rawiri says rather than using tikanga, Orakei is in fact using its wealth to drag his iwi through the courts.
Ngati Paoa is trying to follow the same process Ngati Whatua used to get its settlement, which included millions of dollars of properties on the North Shore which were arguably in Ngati Paoa’s area of interest.
He says initialling the deed of settlement allows his iwi to take it back to members for ratification.
