Marble fantasy wins reo book award


Te Kaihanga Mapere, or in English, The Marble Maker by Sacha Cotter with illustrations by Josh Morgan has won the Te Kura Pounamu Award for the Best Book in te reo Maori at this year’s Children’s Book Awards.
The judges felt the book stood out not only for the excellent quality of Maori translation by, but also for its inspiring storyline which encourages young readers to follow their dreams and persevere in all they do.
It tells of a child who invents a new marble in a chaotic lab, with a sheep as an assistant and using ingredients as diverse as ‘teeth bling from a retired rapper’, ‘three pints of swooshy night air’ and ‘a snippet from a sheep’s fringe’.
The book is from Huia Publishers.
The Margaret Mahy Book of the Year went to Snark, a reteling of the Lewis Carroll story by Otago writer and illustrator David Elliott, which also won the Russell Clark Award for Illustration.
