Driving lessons for rangatahi in Labour toolkit
Labour is going into the election with a $50 million a year promise to ensure students leave school able to drive and with a grasp of practical budgeting and civics.
The school leaver toolkit was flagged two years ago as a recommendation from the party's Future of Work review, and has similar elements to the $4 million Taiohi Ararau Passport to Life programme for rangatahi Maori included in this year's Budget.
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says young people need to leave the school system with the skills they need for a productive life.
"What we are trying to do is say these are the skills our young people require in the modern world and we will do everything we can to ensure they get them before they leave secondary school and either transition to further education or employment, and these are bottom lines we can guarantee to every parent and to every young person going through our public secondary education system," she says.
Lousia Wall says civics is a way to address the under-participation of young people to enrol and vote.
