Union prompts repayment from Turei
The Tax Payers Union of New Zealand is asking Green Party Co-Leader Metiria Turei to pay back what she owes WINZ.
Head of the Union Jordan Williams says they've estimated she owes about $57,000. He says whatever her situation was 20 years ago is very different from her life today. As a senior member of parliament and on a salary of over $200,000 Jordan Williams says Metiria is now in the country's highest income bracket.
"Whatever the amount is, her total remuneration is more than $200,000 at the moment, it's been pretty high since she's been MP for about 15 years, she is one of the top one percent of income earners in New Zealand, she can afford to pay that money back but she admits she wasn't entitled to and that's all we're asking for", says Williams.
Metiria Turei says she'll repay what she's owed if asked by WINZ. Political Commentator Chris Trotter says calculating what she owes will be difficult as New Zealand's punitive laws means historical crimes can never be forgiven.
