This week marks Te Matahi o Te Tau, the Maori new year.

Maori Astronologer Dr Rangi Mataamua says this is the time of Tangaroa, the last phase of the full moon.

It lasts around four days and it's also the first month of the Maori lunar calendar.

Te Matahi o Te Tau concludes on Thursday which is the eve of the new moon.
