Post settlement iwi making strong returns
A study of 31 post settlement iwi show they're making strong returns on investments with plenty more room to grow.
Te Tirohanga Whanui the annual ANZ Maori Business Research series this year found that the combined asset base of the 31 iwi was $4.6 billion.
The study findings found the iwi relatively conservative in it's investments with the bulk of its funds still in cash and managed funds.
According to ANZ Head of Maori Research David Harrison iwi have a willingness to enter into partnerships with each other when seeking out new investments.
"Iwi generally have similar values similar long term horizons, so they make sense in terms of investment partners and by collaborating that means they can gain the access to deals they wouldn't be able to individually.
Collaboration is something that our previous Maori business research has shown is an area that Maori lead the way in terms of an openness and willingness to work together", says David Harrison.
