Turei highlights the War on the Poor
The Greens co leader Metiria Turei's admission of benefit fraud when a student, highlights the depth of poverty beneficiaries are living in says Marama Davidson.
Greens MP Marama Davidson has come out in support of her co leader this morning saying the Party's 'Families Package Policy' is based on real solutions for real people doing it tough.
Marama Davidson says Metiria Turei was able to do this by highlighting her own situation.
"It was really important for her to front this in a way that was really authentic. She chose to be able to talk about exactly how hard it is to survive and we know this still happens today and right now that people are forced to tell a lie about their situation because people are just not getting enough to live and not getting enough to get by," she says.
Metiria Turei's admission has taken the shine off the Party's 'Families Package' that was announced in the weekend.
The Party plans to increase benefits by 20%, increase the value of Working for Families and create a Children's Credit of $72 a week.
Marama Davidson says the new policy is about stopping the war on the poor, lifting whanau out of poverty.
"We have known that this policy should be a transformational one. One that gets at the systemic flaws that have been pushing more and more people into poverty and bashing people on lower incomes", she says.
