Whakapapa draws Kang to Maori Party
Newly selected Maori Party candidate for Botany, Wetex Kang believes his historical whakapapa is what draws him to Maori.
Born in Borneo Wetex Kang spent time in Australia before coming to Aotearoa.
He says it's on his grandmothers side that connects him to Maori.
"My grandmother she was half Malayan half Chinese so from a genealogy point of view, if you believe Hawaiki is Taiwan, the next stop is the shore of a town called Kota Kinabalu that's the second stop of the waka and apparently the last push was to New Zealand so I believe in my blood I have a strong link to tangata whenua."
Wetex Kang is a businessman and says he was encouraged to stand for the Maori Party by close friend and associate Tame Iti.
