Maori and Pasifika women further marginalised over smoking survey
The results of a new survey just released by Otago University has outraged smoking cessation advocate Dr Marewa Glover.
The survey analysed trends on smoking in cars around children.
Dr Glover says the survey is highly skewed against Maori and Pasifika women who make up the majprity of smokers and further maginalises them even against high profile individuals.
"And even the children's commissioner the other day, Judge Becroft came out on this topic and said that he thinks parents who smoke are irresponsible. And I just wonder if he realises that he just implied that over 40 per cent of Maori parents are irresponsible because that's how many Maori parents smoke and that's outrageous," she says.
